While dealing with a long term medical illness is difficult enough, for most there is still the need to provide for oneself and/or one's family, as well as being able to still enjoy a modicum of lifestyle. Although the type and severity of the illness plays a major role in determining how this can be achieved, there are a variety of ways to gain employment despite long term illness.

Steps

  1. Know your illness. If you're still coming to terms with or learning about your malady, consult with a relevant practitioner about what they feel would be appropriate to undertake. In the vast majority of instances an MD, therapist, spiritual consul would be wholly supportive of your decision to find employment, as holding down a job despite the rigors and routine involved, typically has a strong positive influence on the outlook of someone suffering from illness and often assists in the path to recovery, or at the very least the effective management of illness. Family, friends and trusted peers can also be of immense value in offering advice about what's out there or as an outside perspective to what they believe you can achieve. Like anyone, the opinions of those we listen to play a major role in our decisions and ideally will also be a source of encouragement and support.
  2. Find the right kind of work for your condition. A chronic asthmatic should most likely not be a football coach, however there is nothing to prevent them from being a regular teacher, office worker, computer technician. It's important to understand the nature of your illness and what it may restrict you from doing, this is often easier defined for people with a physical illness or disability rather than someone experiencing prolonged mental illness. A person with a recurring spinal injury would know not to work in menial labor or other physically demanding roles however it is not as obvious for someone suffering from bipolar disorder what they should or should not do, in these cases it's important to understand more about the limitations your condition impose.
  3. Fill any gaps in your work history with activities you can handle. Part-time employment and volunteer work are both good ways to avoid having to answer a question about your work history with the answer "I was sick."[1]
  4. Focus on what you can do. There's no point day dreaming about being a jet pilot if you are blind in one eye. As blunt as that is, the sooner you remove unrealistic ambitions and nonproductive attitudes about what you want to do and can't, the sooner you can start doing what you can. If a side effect of your illness or the treatment thereof gives you fatigue, consider part time or home based employment. If high pressure roles have a negative impact on your mental state, pursue a low stress occupation. With the right amount of consideration and perseverance work exists for almost any illness you may have.
  5. Look for employment with companies to which protective laws apply. The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires employers with 50 or more workers, for instance, to grant you up to a total of 12 work weeks of unpaid leave during any 12-month period for your own serious health condition without losing your job or your health insurance. The Americans with Disability Act (ADA) requires employers with 15 or more employees to make reasonable accommodations (e.g. modified work schedule, wheelchair ramp) around your disability (e.g. epilepsy, paralysis, HIV infection, AIDS, cancer) as long as you can carry out the essential tasks of the job. Note that smaller companies may still be able to accommodate your condition without being required by law; check the employee manual.[2]
  6. Find out whether your employer has a short- or long-term disability plan. Such a plan may guarantee that you get all or a portion of your pay for a certain period. You may also want to find out how much sick time or unused vacation time you have that can be applied in case your condition requires you to take time off.[2]
  7. Be careful about what you divulge. The employment laws of the country you live in will play a significant role in what you have to disclose about your illness, and also regarding your rights against potential discrimination. The decision as to how much you want to reveal is yours; information withheld about an illness may effect your employment at some point if it has an unwanted impact on your ability to do your job (a chain of sick days for example, or unexplained erratic behavior). In the US, a potential employer is not permitted to ask questions like the following before extending a job offer:[3]

    • Do you have a heart condition? Do you have asthma or any other difficulties breathing?
    • Do you have a disability which would interfere with your ability to perform the job?
    • How many days were you sick last year?
    • Have you ever filed for workers' compensation? Have you ever been injured on the job?
    • Have you ever been treated for mental health problems?
    • What prescription drugs are you currently taking?

    An employer can require a medical examination after offering you a job, but can only withdraw the offer only if they can show that you are unable to perform the essential functions of the job (with or without reasonable accommodation), or that you pose a significant risk of causing substantial harm to yourself or others.[3]
  8. The real obstacle is your attitude not your illness. Having an illness or disability is far from saying that you are prevented from achieving real accomplishments. History and modern society is abundant with figures who have not only overcome their illness to succeed but in many cases used it as a driving force. Helen Keller, who was born completely blind, deaf and mute innovated modern sign language. Franklin D. Roosevelt became a renowned American president despite being made a paraplegic by polio. Many artists, musicians, public figures and businessmen have experienced and managed varying kinds of mental illness during the road to success, and so can you. Ultimately it's down to your own determination how you gain employment or pursue a passion. Remember that for many "healthy" people finding a job can be a major struggle and often their only reasons are lack of motivation or an inability to accept responsibility. In many ways, having the challenge of illness puts arbitrary matters into perspective and becomes in itself a motivation to achieve. It is important however, depending on your condition, to be aware of your own health when making choices about the nature of work you wish to do.

  • Non-profit and community organizations, especially those that may be directly related to your condition, are an excellent place to either get leads or find work.

Lemon oil pickle is a tangy pickle, ideal for accompanying ploughman's lunch plates and for curries. This is a great way to use up a glut of lemons.

Ingredients

Amounts are dependent on how many lemons you have and how large your jars are:

  • Whole lemons
  • Salt
  • Turmeric
  • Peppercorns
  • Dried chillies (optional)
  • Olive oil (quality)

Steps

  1. Slice the whole lemons thinly. Layer the slices in a bowl and sprinkle with salt. Leave to stand overnight. Drain well the following day.
  2. Layer the salted lemon slices in clean jars. Sprinkle with turmeric and add a few peppercorns here and there. If you want more heat, add some dried chillies.
  3. Leave a small space between the last lemon layer and the top of the jar. Pour in olive oil to the top. Screw lid on tightly.
  4. Fold a cloth and lay it on the base of a saucepan. Put the jars into the saucepan, sitting on top of the folded cloth. Cover the jars with cold water and slowly bring to the boil.
  5. Leave to boil steadily for half an hour. Top up with water if it evaporates. Remove from heat and leave to cool.
  6. Check that the jars are properly sealed before storage. Leave in a cool, dry place for a minimum of one month before using.

Tips

  • These make a wonderful gift; be sure to use a nice jar and add a fabric lid cap and some ribbon. Attach a label showing what the gift is and its ingredients.

Minor accidents, abrasions and bruises will occur at the most inconvenient of times. It may be useful to know how you can help prevent infection if you don't have a medical disinfectant like rubbing alcohol handy. Here's a simple solution you can assemble from household ingredients if you're in a pinch.

Ingredients

  • Bottled water
  • 1 Tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar (alternatively, fresh lemon juice)

Steps

  1. Add bottled water into a glass cup until it is a little more than three-quarters full, making sure that the glass was clean beforehand.
  2. Add salt into water. Salt can be iodized. The salt used for regular cooking will be ideal. Salt is known to contain many bactericidal properties.
  3. Mix well until all the salt dissolves in water.
  4. Add vinegar and mix well. Any kind of vinegar (processed or natural), will do the trick. Vinegar contains a mild acetic acid, which can cleanse and disinfect wounds. If vinegar is unavailable, fresh lemon juice will also suffice.
  5. Soak into cotton wool and apply to fresh cuts and abrasions on skin. It's preferable to open a sealed pack of cotton wool.
  6. After use, dispose of this liquid. It's not suitable for storage either at room temperature or by refrigeration. Make a fresh preparation each time this procedure needs to be repeated.

Tips

  • Remember this is one time use only. It cannot be saved for later.
  • You could also apply mouthwash or aftershave.
  • Mild boric acid can be used as a weak disinfectant for the eyes.

Warnings

  • If wound or cut is deep seated or lacerated, seek medical help immediately.
  • If there is no evidence of healing, see a medical doctor as antibiotics may need to be administered.
  • Abrasions or cuts caused by rusty or metal objects have to be treated by a medical specialist. Do not try self healing in these instances.
