Here is a delicious, quick and very easy way to serve chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans). This zesty dish is lovely served with cumin & sesame roasted potatoes as a complete meal. The beauty of this recipe is that it uses minimal ingredients and has no complicated spices, but doesn't come short on flavour.

This will serve 4.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon oil (olive oil is a good choice)
  • 1 capsicum/bell pepper chopped; if possible, look for one that is both red and green, or use two halves
  • 1/2 onion, chopped (or 1 small onion)
  • 1 stick of celery, cut into small pieces
  • Garlic to taste, about 1 teaspoon, which is a generous amount
  • 800 grams chickpeas, rinsed and drained (this is about 2 cans)
  • 1 large tomato, cut into wedges, or two small ones
  • 3 or 4 dessert spoons of a chunky chili-lime preserve (or to taste); you would usually find this in the international section of your supermarket or in a South Asian grocery store
  • 300 ml of water or low-salt vegetable stock

Steps

  1. Heat a frying pan and add 1 tablespoon of oil. When the oil is hot, add the onion, celery and capsicum. Saute for about 1 minute and then add garlic. Stir well to avoid burning.
  2. After 2 minutes when the vegetables are just starting to soften, add the tomato wedges.
  3. Add the chickpeas, chili-lime preserve and water (or stock). Stir well. You can add a lid, but it's not essential.
    • Avoid crushing the chickpeas. If they fall in half, it's no problem, but the texture of whole chickpeas is more desirable.
  4. Simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the water or stock is almost gone. You will want the consistency of a sauce, but not soupy or too dry. If you find that it has dried out a little, or you had to wait for something else to cook, add a little more water, as it will soon be absorbed.
  5. Serve. Rice is a good accompaniment, but the cumin roast potatoes really make it a meal.

Tips

  • Avoid adding salt as it can toughen the chickpeas. Add it to the potatoes instead, or at the table.
  • You can always add more chillies if you wish. Other spices though (such as curry powder) may hide the other flavours.
  • If you can't find a suitable preserve, try mixing lime juice with a chili paste or sauce.
  • This dish is suitable for both cool and warm weather.

Things You'll Need

  • Frying pan, skillet
  • Wooden spoon
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Can opener
  • Serving plates

Face Painting Butterfly
Face Painting Butterfly
A butterfly design that incorporates a person's facial features is a very effective technique for party fun, or for matching a cosplay, fancy dress, or theater costume. This article explains just how easy it is to paint a lovely butterfly on a face.

Steps

  1. Arch 1
    Arch 1
Load up a fine paintbrush with blue paint. Create an arch over one eyebrow. Start just at the top of the nose, go above the eyebrow and finish at the temple.
  2. Arch 2
    Arch 2
Do the same for the other eye.
  3. Even up
    Even up
Make sure both sides are even. Don't worry if the lines look thick, as long as they are roughly the same height and width.
  4. Raise eyebrows
    Raise eyebrows
Ask your client to raise their eyebrows if necessary, and apply more paint to ensure evenness. If you get this stage right, the remaining steps will be easier.
  5. Lower arch 1
    Lower arch 1
Starting just below the start point of the upper arch, create an up-turned arch below the first eye. Join it up to the outside edge of the upper arch.
  6. Lower arch 2

Repeat on the other side of the face.
  7. Smile

Make sure both sides are even. Again, don't worry about the thick lines; the tip here is to ask your client to smile.
  8. Lower wing 1
    Lower wing 1
Create the lower butterfly wing by painting a sweeping crescent shape. Start at the nose, go across the cheek and finally meet up with the top wing.
  9. Lower wing 2

    Repeat for the other side.
  10. Pink fill 1

Select a slightly larger brush and load up with pink paint. Fill in one of the lower wings with paint, blending in the edges as you go.

  13. Yellow flash

Wash your brush again and load up with yellow paint. Apply small yellow lines just below the white flashes.
  14. Frilled edge

Return to the white paint. Use a fine brush and create a frilled edge around the outside of the butterfly wings. The easiest way to do this is to create small 'c' shapes.

    Repeat on the other side.
  16. Top of nose

Paint the butterfly body. Using purple paint, load up the larger paint brush and start by placing the brush right at the top of your nose, then paint in a downwards motion towards the tip.

It helps if you have a cute, small nose - most children do, so it's easy to get a good effect here.

Paint in the antennae. Follow the arch shape of the top wing.

Use both black and white paint to add emphasis and highlight to the design. Try not to be too heavy with the paint–you can always add more.

Tips

  • Tie hair out of the way before you make a start.
  • Practice on yourself first, using a mirror; this is a lot harder and if you can paint your own face, doing some-one else's face will be much easier.
  • Use bright colours–the effect is much more appealing.
  • Children won't sit still for too long, so learn how to make short-cuts and finish quickly.
  • Glitter paints add another dimension and look stunning when applied on top of the finished design, use sparingly as some glitter paints can sometimes affect sensitive skin.
  • A good supply of baby wipes is always useful, to wipe off dirt etc., from the face before starting.
  • Always remove the design at the end of the day - a warm bubbly bath usually does the trick.

Warnings

  • Only use water-based face paints that are specifically designed for painting on skin.
  • Not suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Avoid getting face paints near the eyes.
  • Use clean water.
  • Clean your brushes between uses.
  • Avoid clothing, just in case the paints stain.

  • Face Paints, water tub and paints
