Facebook has recently added the ability for its users to "Like" just about any content on the web and have that activity posted to the users' walls. This facility lets you share content more readily and also gives you an idea of how some of your readership traffic is responding to your content.

This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to add the "Like" button to your Blogger (BlogSpot) blog, one of the more commonly used blogging services.

Steps

  1. Go to the "Facebook Developers" page: http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like.

  2. Set the options you want. Specifically, select whether you want a "Like" or a "Recommend" button. The sample button on the page will automatically update to reflect your selections.
  3. Leave the "URL to Like" field blank. You will be replacing that soon.
  4. Click "Get Code". You will see something that looks like this:

    <iframe src="http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=

    http%253A%252F%252Fexample.com%252Fpage%252Fto%252Flike&layout=standard&

    show_faces=false&width=450&action=like&colorscheme=light"

    scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" style="border:none;

    overflow:hidden; width:450px; height:px"></iframe>
  5. Replace the following text:
    • src= above with:
      expr:src='
    • http%253A%252F%252Fexample.com%252Fpage%252Fto%252Flike&layout part with:
      " + data:post.url + "&layout
    • light" with:
      light"'
      -- notice the new trailing apostrophe
    • height:px with:
      height:35px
      -- otherwise, Firefox will make the iframe really big.
    • Leave a copy of the final code somewhere accessible for you to transfer to Blogger.
  6. Go to your Blogger Dashboard.
  7. Open your blog's layout and click Edit HTML.

  8. Back up your template! Do this by clicking Download Full Template.

  9. Check Expand Widget Templates.

  10. Find a place to put the Facebook "Like" code into your HTML layout. A good location is directly after or below:
    <div class='post-footer'>
    • Use the browser "Find" mechanism to help you locate it.
  11. Save and check that the button has appeared. Once you can see it, you're done!

Tips

  • As of May 16, 2010 this feature is only available in the English language.

Warnings

  • Always back up your blog's template before making changes to its layout!
  • It is recommended that you keep "Show Faces" unchecked and use the "button_count" layout. Otherwise, less-savvy users who did not configure their privacy settings properly may be turned off by their profiles appearing on your blog after "Liking" it.

How to Make a Strawberry Jar Planter from a Plastic Jug

Strawberry jar planters are so expensive. Why not make your own by recycling a plastic jug and some plastic bottles or cups?

Steps

  1. This is the type of jug.

    Prepare the jug. Remove the jug handle by cutting one end of the pin that holds it in. (Use the handles for some other project.) Use a heat gun or hair dryer to soften the labels to remove them.
  2. Cut the bottom out. Turn the jug upside down and cut out a rectangle, leaving an edge all around.
  3. Stagger all around, so that all four sides are different.

    Cut the holes. Cut the holes out on the sides and top only, using a SoniCrafter or whatever you have that will cut through tough plastic.
    • Cut off the top 2/3, leaving the bottom 1/3 to attach your bottle/cup to.
    • At this point, score along the bottom, so that the flap can be bent inward.

    Cut the "pots". Use the miter saw to cut off the top of the bottle. (If you are using plastic cups, you can skip this step).

    Use a file/rasp to take off the splinters left behind from cutting. They don't have to be totally smooth.

    Add the "pots". Set the half bottles/cups in the holes of the planter. The top of the "pot" should be just a little above the top of the hole, just so that it doesn't slip inside. Cut off any excess bottle/cup.
  6. Screw each cup to each flap.

    Caulk the "pots". Measure the space between the top of the holes to the bottom of the "pots" and cut a scrap piece of board to fit in and use as a wedge to keep the pots up against the planter. Caulk around the outside edges of each "pot", sides and bottom. Add the caulk to the sides of each "pot" on the inside. After the caulking has dried, you'll probably need to check it over and recaulk any areas that you missed.

    Drill the drainage holes. Let the caulking cure for the time advised. Once this is done, drill drainage holes in the bottom of the planter.

    Paint the strawberry jar planter. Sand it just to roughen it up a bit and wipe it down. You are now ready to paint. Paint with a spray paint made for plastic.
