Doughnuts can be made from either a quick bread or a yeast bread dough. Either way, once the dough is made, frying and sugaring the doughnuts is a snap. They are easy and cheap to make, making them worthwhile for weekend snacks. Instead of buying doughnuts with your Saturday morning coffee, try whipping up a batch at home!

Ingredients

  • 8.8 fluid ounces, 250 ml yogurt, 1 cup approximate
  • 6 ounces sugar, 170 grams, 7/8 cup approximate
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (essence)
  • 1.6 ounces melted butter, 45 grams, 1 1/2 tablespoons, approximate
  • 500 grams flour, 17.6 ounces, 4 cups flour, approximate
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 50 grams flour, 1.8 ounces for dusting, as needed, or about 2 tablespoons
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 liter, 1.8 pints, 1 heaping quart, vegetable oil for frying,
  • Powdered sugar, for decoration or presentation

Steps

  1. Add the eggs and sugar to a mixing bowl. Whisk well until light and fluffy.

  2. Add the yogurt and whisk into the sugar mixture.
  3. Add the vanilla, salt and melted butter. Briefly whisk into the mixture.
  4. Combine the dry ingredients in a separate mixing bowl.
  5. Add the dry mix to the liquid ingredients in the mixing bowl.
  6. Mix together well with a wooden spoon. Be careful not to over-mix the dough, as over-mixing will make the doughnuts tough.
  7. Lightly dust the board with flour. Dust some of the flour onto your own hands as well.
  8. Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 0.5 centimeters or 0.2 inches.
    • Cut out the doughnut shapes using the large round pastry cutter.
    • Use a small round pastry cutter to cut out the centers (or holes).
  9. Save the dough scraps and combine with the uncut pastry dough to form new pastry for rolling.
  10. Continue to cut out the doughnuts shapes until all the dough has been used up.
  11. Pour the oil into the saucepan and place the saucepan over medium heat. Line the tray with paper towels while waiting for the oil to heat.
  12. Add the doughnuts to the hot oil. Fry them for about 1 minute, or until golden brown.
    • Turn the doughnuts over and continue frying until golden.
    • Repeat until all the doughnuts are cooked.
    • Fry any doughnut holes that have been left over from the pastry cutting.
  13. Drain the cooked doughnuts on paper towels.
  14. Dust the doughnuts with powdered sugar. Alternately, add the glaze from the following recipe.

Doughnut Glaze

This glaze is ideal for adding to your doughnuts in place of powdered sugar.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • Dash vanilla extract (essence), if desired, optional

Steps

  1. Add water to a small saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Add the powdered sugar to a small mixing bowl. Add the boiling water to powdered sugar, and the dash of vanilla, if using.
  3. Mix the ingredients together until smooth.
  4. Drizzle or spoon the glaze over the doughnuts.

Tips

  • As a serving suggestion, the doughnuts can be glazed with strawberry, chocolate, or raspberry sauces.
