How to Guard Your Privacy on Facebook Without Hurting Anyone's Feelings: Make Friends Lists

Ideally, you'd feel fine with showing any Facebook friend any part of your profile. But sometimes, you risk an awkward or uncomfortable situation by ignoring a "friends request" from someone who you don't want to share everything with. Fortunately, you can divide your Facebook friends into lists, and if you fine-tune your privacy settings, your mom will never get to see you shotgunning a beer.

Steps

  1. Click on "Friends" from the menu on the left side.
  2. Click on the "Create a List" button towards the upper right of the page.

  3. Type in the name of the group at the top. Then select people from your friends list to be in that group. (Note that pages will come up here, too.) When you're done, click "Create List".

  4. Click on "Account" from the upper right hand corner and choose "Privacy Settings".
  5. Choose "Custom" from the left menu and click on "Customize Settings".

  6. For every dropdown menu, choose "Customize".

  7. For "Make this visible to" choose "Specific People" from the dropdown menu and type in the name of the list of people who you want to be able to see this part of your profile. Alternatively, choose who you want to lock out of that part of your profile by typing the name of the list into "Hide this from".

  8. Go back to the main privacy page and click on the "View Settings" link under "Basic Directory Information". This controls who can find you, and what they can see if they do. It also controls who can contact you. Each setting has its own dropdown menu.

  9. Set privacy for your photos by album. Go to http://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=privacy#!/privacy/?view=photos and choose an option from the dropdown menu for each album, in the same way you did for the previous step.

Tips

  • Here are the types of groups that might be useful to create:
    • Family members
    • Co-workers
    • Locals - If you post a status update that's only relevant to your location, you might want to choose to have only this group see it.
    • Interest-specific - Let's say you're an entomologist; when you post a link about insect evolution, or an album of dung beetles mating, you might want to spare the rest of your friends and have only your fellow entomologists see them.
