Chocolate chip cookies are one of the best snacks or even desserts. If you're a chewy cookie devotee rather than the crunchy cookie type, the cookies in this recipe will delight you. They're chewy in part due to the addition of brown sugar, which helps to increase the moisture content, a factor that helps to ensure chewier cookies.[1]

This recipe makes approximately 2 dozen medium sized cookies.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 Tsp vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup of butter (room temperature)
  • 2 1/4 cups of flour (adapt this for elevation and humidity as needed, make sure the cups are level)
  • 1 Tsp of salt
  • 1 Tsp of baking soda
  • 2 Tbs milk
  • Up to 2 cups of chocolate chips (if small, less if large)

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF/180ºC.
  2. Add the vanilla, sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and butter.
    • Use coarser sugar for thicker, chewier cookies. When sugar dissolves, it acts as a tenderizer that interferes with dough structure. This increases spreading in much the same way as baking soda does as described in the previous step because finer sugar dissolves more easily than coarser sugar. So if you want your cookies to remain thick and chewy, use coarse sugar (or use fine sugar for the opposite effect). If you decide to use powdered sugar for extra crispiness, make sure it doesn't have corn starch in it, or you'll get unexpected results.[2]
    • Mix these ingredients until creamy.
  3. Add the flour, salt, and baking soda.
  4. Mix until fully blended; add the milk to achieve a smoothly blended dough. After blending the mixture, add the chocolate chips.
  5. Apply the cooking spray to the pan so that the cookies won't stick to the baking pan. Alternately, line the pan with baking paper.
  6. Roll a small ball for each cookie.
  7. Place the cookie balls on the baking pan.
  8. Flatten each cookie with a fork. This will leave distinct ridges and flatten the cookie neatly.
  9. Put cookies in the oven for about 8-10 minutes. Don't overdo the cooking, as they'll continue to cook after removal from the oven.
  10. Take the cookies out of the oven and let them sit on a wire cooling rack for about 15 minutes to cool. Be careful not to burn yourself on the melted chips when transferring the cookies to the cooling rack - use a spatula. The cookies are ready to eat when the chocolate chips solidify again.
  11. Store in an airtight container, or eat the cookies once they've cooled.

Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson proclaimed the American Armed Forces Day in August 31, 1949.[1] In the United States, Armed Forces Day is always celebrated on the third Saturday in May to honor all American military personnel. This article explains the ways in which you can participate and celebrate the occasion.

Steps

  1. Attend a military air show. Most air shows are held during the middle to late May. Local media will provide air show information and any other celebration details, or you can call the Public Information Office at your nearest military installation.
  2. Check the US Department of Defense's Armed Forces Day page to find local celebrations.[2] For those in the Washington, D.C. region, consider attending the longest-running Armed Forces Parade in the U.S.[3] If there is an open house at a local military base, consider attending. It will give an opportunity to talk to the men and women on duty.
  3. Attend a parade. Find out in advance where it is and get there early enough to find a good spot to view it from. Take your camera if you want to capture some memories from the occasion.
  4. Remember military who not only defend the US but share freedom's beauty on foreign soil.

Start a new tradition by sending a care package to overseas military personnel. Consider other ways that you might be able to let those serving know that you appreciate their efforts, such as making and sending thank you cards, or sending thank you emails.[4]
  5. Fly the flag on Armed Forces Day. There are many guidelines for displaying the American flag properly, with respect to the flag itself, as well as to any other flags that may be displayed along with it. Learn how to follow the United States Flag Code.
  6. Iwo Jima is where American military gave their all to protect freedom.

    Involve children in the celebrations:
    • Plan lessons for school students in the lead up to the event. Educators could write lesson plans reviewing the history of the American military. Develop a thematic approach to incorporate reading, writing, social studies and a craft that are focused on Armed Forces Day.[5]
    • Print off U.S. flags and have children color them in. They can take these to the local parade if wished.
    • Make patriotic crafts together. Make a pinwheel, a paper star, or a wind sock in flag colors.

Tips

  • It is important to recognize the difference between Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day. Armed Forces Day is when civilians have a chance to celebrate the military and to learn more about what those serving in the military are doing to protect civilians, along with taking part in festivals, air shows, and seeing bases and demonstrations of military equipment. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for the men and women who have lost their lives in military service, and visits to cemeteries are a common method of celebrating and honoring those lost.
